Two months later and I still remember this retreat as my favorite place I stayed in NZ. The owner, Ian, is exceptionally kind and friendly. He really tries to facilitate friendships between the guests, and gives great advice for the Tongariro crossing as well as other activities in the area. Overall the place has a genuine, easygoing, and social atmosphere that (imo) is not commonly found. I extended my stay here and could have stayed longer!

Beautiful stay with the most gracious hosts. Jason was so helpful as we navigated the area and prepared to hike the Tongariro Crossing. The room was beautiful, quiet, clean, and comfy. The wooden spa in the beautiful garden offered the perfect relief after our epic hike. Great breakfasts and conversation with our hosts. They just couldn't do more for us! Sadly, we were not able to take advantage of the world-famous fishing, but hope to get back to the area one day.

We really enjoyed our stay at Creel Lodge. The room was very nice and clean, we had separate bedrooms, living area and kitchen, and porch. If you walk to the back of the property there is a private gate that leads to a nice walk by the river. The lodge is also close enough to take a short walk into the main town area where there is a grocery store and restaurants. I would recommend staying here and would stay here again.

Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
beautiful B&B run by a gracious and charming couple. the house is comfortable, well appointed with lovely guest rooms. on-suite bathroom with lots of shelf space for toiletries. very comfortable bed! wine and hors d’oeuvres served in the living room late afternoon gave us a chance to chat and meet other guests. breakfast was delicious including a parfait to die for! The location was perfect for getting to Turangi sights and activities. We highly recommend this outstanding property.
Nice quiet location. Large apartment with kitchen, friendly and helpful staff. It's a short walk to lovely river views, and if you're there for fishing, it's the perfect stop. There is a laundry room onsite, which is always helpful when traveling for a month. Very close proximity to a New World supermarket. (The first time you visit a New World market in New Zealand, ask for a tourist membership card, no sign-up required. It will save you money every time you shop.)
Lovely older style motel that has been well looked after.Facilities you might need were all there available. The motel is well laid out with colourful flowers in the garden areas. The lawn area is lovely to sit or for children to play on sunny days.Everything was clean and worked well in the motel. The beds were very comfortable. The motel is handy to Turangi shopping centre and there is a pizza cafe which has other meals on its menu just over the road.
I wanted an economical weekend trip over Waitangi weekend and this motel was ideal because it was very good value, half the price of similar motels in Taupo, yet only 45 minutes drive from Turangi to Taupo. It's a great central location. The staff at the motel were friendly and the accommodation was spacious and warm.
The owners are so nice and friendly. We also love the family swimming pool since we have a kid. The apartment is clean, very comfortable and homey. We will definitely come back and stay again in Tokaanu lodge motel when we go for a holiday within the area... 😊😊😊
Excellent place to stay with family. If you don’t mind staying away from little further from town than this place is great. Turangi town was not that far tho. Taupo 45mins drive and Whakapapa about 50 mins drive. Basically you are staying at one end of Taupo lake.
Absolute value for money. Definitely a better option compared to other motels in the area. A VERY short walk to the shops. The accomodation had everything you would ever need for a short stay.
Sarah was the best host.
Definitely recommend this accomodation 👍
The views are amazing looking out over Lake Taupo. In general the apartment was comfortable and convenient. The location is close enough to the ski fields for a day of skiing or to the mountains for hiking.
The restaurant was fabulous, the team were great, the food was excellent and ohhh the lovely big fireplace absolutely delicious. the fact this space was pet friendly was an added bonus.
I needed somewhere to pass the night as I drove north. I booked quite late on-line and arrived in Turangi after 9 pm. However, my booking had lodged and a room was ready for me.
A clean motel with comfortable beds.Adequate facilities and close to Turangi township.A lovely friendly lady showed us to our unit.Very good value for money.E
