Bilit Adventure Lodge, hotel in Sukau

Located along the Kinabatangan River, Bilit Adventure Lodge is located amid a tropical landscape filled with native wildlife.

We loved our 2 nights and 3 days stay at Bilit Adventure Lodge. We had a great time and total disconnect from rest of the world like no social medias, no internet, no tvs…however it’s possible you can purchase 1G at lodge but we didn’t by purpose since we had such a jungle, remote and nature experience. So sad coming back to civilization after 3 days…Anyways, we would love to shout out to our guide ROBERT who did our trip to Kinabatangan so special and memorable. He was so professional, knowledgeable of wild life, life encoglephia, birds, spotting and caring person that we already so much respect to him and appreciate more than a lot. Thank you so much Robert for your kindness and caring for us those days since we met at airport and drop off airport. Now little bit our experience at lodge, we had 1st day boat trip through river, got spotted many birds, crocodiles, monitors and etc…then night jungle walking is great experience also. Next morning boat trip was so emotional that we’ve seen Sunrise, many more wild life’s including proboscis monkeys ets…then next evening boat trip…just wonderful. What a day…we spotted 7 elephants along with many birds species and crocodile etc. How thankful for this trip…just amazing…even just around walking lodge already we have a lots of monkeys, birds and giants butterflies…and at last we would like to say Thank you to all the stuffs at Bilit Lodge and specially for our guide Robert!!!

Borneo Jungle Adventure, hotel in Sukau

With a terrace and barbecue facilities, Borneo Jungle Adventure is located in Kinabatangan and has free WiFi. There's a fully equipped private bathroom with shower and free toiletries.

Great location on the river with lots of land and animals. The accommodations are simple and comfortable and great open air lounge for dining. What this lodge has is HEART. The naturalist (Linda), Captain, and Chef all love the jungle and have devoted their lives to protect the jungle and share it with others. I almost booked the Nat Geo resort for US $1500 for 2 nights and so glad I didn’t! Their location is in a developed area whereas this lodge has 60 acres of jungle. This lodge is the last boat on the river doing everything they can to find you animals! It was about to storm and we raced through the dark to find pygmy elephants grazing. Our boat let the other lodges know, but no one else made the effort. They are also expert trackers and other lodges look to them to find the animals.

Kinabatangan Wildlife Lodge, hotel in Sukau

Located in Sandakan in the Sabah region, Kinabatangan Wildlife Lodge has accommodations with free WiFi and free private parking.

We were in the rainforest. The accommodation felt like we were staying in a traditional wood style building… even on stilts, like a traditional home in the area. We did have an air conditioner that worked well. The room had chairs, a bathroom with shower-heat on demand, side tables, plugs for electronics. There was WiFi in the main building. The property has a lotus pond, and lots of wildlife… We had a nice walk (about 10 minutes) through the village on a paved road or you can choose to take a wilder walk with more monkeys, elephants, and dogs to get to the pier to meet the boat. We enjoyed talking to the other guests on these walks. The excursions were wonderful. We went to the cave, took a village tour, went on the morning, evening, and afternoon boat cruises multiple times. We saw all the “Big Five” and many more animals… But the best thing about Kinabatangan Wildlife Lodge was the people! The staff is like a family. It was easy to be drawn in and feel like part of the family while there. Ms. Siti organizes everything and does her best to help meet everyone’s expectations and activities. Ms. Rowena is an amazing Philippino cook, we actually gained weight, even with all the walking. Elephant, Capt. Boy, and Mr. Kai—— were our tour guides for all the excursions. They are very knowledgeable and made each of our adventures a success. Teeny and the girls were a huge help with everything that needed doing. (They even did our laundry) We loved every minute of our stay.

The Last Frontier Boutique Resort, hotel in Sukau

Set atop a 328 foot hill overlooking the Kinabatangan Forest Reserve, The Last Frontier Boutique Resort is located in Bilit, and is located a 2 hour drive from the beautiful Sandakan.

Everything about our stay at the Last Frontier was absolutely unforgettable. Gert and Jason, what perfect hosting! I have travelled a fair amount in my life yet cannot recall better. Communication was always clear and concise regarding requirements etc.and the information extremely helpful. Jason, the knowledge and advice you imparted during pick up and drop off was excellent. Thank you, and thank you all of the team for all of the delicious food and especially for Baljit's birthday surprise and cake. Of course, she had the added surprise of seeing a herd of pygmy elephants swim across the Kinabatangan river on our early morning river cruise that day - fabulous! Thanks for organising that as well - ha! We so enjoyed the river cruises and wildlife spotting. We saw more than we could have expected - Ryan has developed an incredible eye for spotting things that we could not have spotted ourselves. Aside from the magnificent spectacle of the pygmy elephants we also saw Proboscis monkeys, Crested Serpent Eagles, Rhinoceros Hornbills, Oriental Pied Hornbill, various Kingfishers and other birds, Long and Pig Tailed Macaques, Crocodiles, butterflies and moths of such colouring. It really is a jungle experience at the Last Frontier. All in all, a truly amazing time. We didn't want to leave.

Amazing time on the river! This is a great place to stay.

Amazing time on the river! This is a great place to stay. Make sure you visit the Saturday/ Sunday market for a glimpse of local life. We would advise joining as many cruises as possible during your stay, to spot as much wildlife as possible. It seems the tours are all the same just the accommodation varies, so don’t worry about being on a budget. We did a 3D2N tour at sakau backpackers (we believe cheapest on the river) and it was absolutely amazing, comfortable rooms, but the important part was the great river cruises and passionate guides who would do all they could to hunt to find as much wildlife as possible. Out of 4 months in Asia, our time in Sakau and Sepilok has been our favourite.

    It was incredible.

It was incredible. We did the morning and eveninv cruise with Masz (they have their own boat). We saw almost everything! Saw an Orangutan and Masz got a tip off about an elephant but it left just before we arrived but we could still hear it moving through the forest, saw loads of every type of monkey and even a large croc on the bank. Loads of birds like Kingfishers and Hornbills. The restaurant is incredible too, and so cheap! Masz even drove the whole hostel to the local market on Friday evening in her truck. Can’t recommend this place enough. Thanks Masz for such a memorable stay.

Nice place for observation of wild nature during river...

Nice place for observation of wild nature during river cruise. But you must be patient. We didnt see a huge amount of animals close to us but it was really nice to observe orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and other endargered species in wild nature. It is fine to have binoculars for river cruise. We didnt have it and we would really appreciate it. Night river cruise was also very interesting. We really admired eagle eyes of our guide who could see birds, snakes, little crocodiles and showed us them from very near distance if it was possible.
